Neuro-Ophthalmology Service:


Neuro-ophthalmology is a subspecialty of both neurology and ophthalmology that deals with the visual problem which are related to the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord)
These fall into two main groups:

  1. Diseases affecting the optic nerve. 2. Diseases affecting eye movement.

Optic Nerve Diseases


The optic nerve is the only nerve in the body that can be directly examined by a doctor. It connects the eye to the brain. It can be thought of as an electrical cable bringing visual information from the eye to the brain for processing.


The optic nerve can be affected by:

  1. Inflammation
  2. Ischemia (inadequate blood supply)
  3. Compression
  4. Raised intracranial pressure
  5. Trauma
    Eye Movement Disorders
    Many diseases affect movement of the eyes. The following is a brief list of some:

Local (orbital) disease causing restriction of movement.

Disease affecting the nerves to the muscles causing weakness.

Diseases affecting the transmission of signals between nerve and muscle.

Diseases of the muscle.

Diseases affecting portions of the brain that control movement.
Eye movement disorders can present in one or more of the following ways:

Double vision

Blurred vision

Unstable (“shaky”) vision

The vision in each eye (when tested separately) is often normal. However, visual disturbance occurs when both eyes are used. Eye movement disorders may also be accompanied by giddiness, and unsteady gait, headaches or weakness involving other parts of the body.


Eye movement disorders that occur suddenly require urgent medical attention to rule out serious conditions such as a rupture of blood vessels supplying the brain. Investigation and treatment is directed at the cause of the eye disorder.


Some blood investigations and a lumbar puncture to obtain cerebrospinal fluid for analysis are needed. Treatment with steroids may also be required. The cause is usually apparent on CT Scan or MRI. A referral to a neurosurgeon may be necessary.



Uvea Clinic
Uvea is one of the layers of the eyeball which is rich in blood vessels and UVEITIS is the name for several types of inflammation of this layer affecting the inner part of the eye. Uveitis often causes impaired vision and if untreated can have devastating sight threatening complications. It is not a single disease but a collective term referring to many different conditions within the eye. It can affect the whole of the uvea (pan-uveitis) or any part of the uvea like the front (anterior), the middle (intermediate) or the back (posterior). Sometimes it is associated with various kinds of systemic diseases like different types of arthritis, sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, syphilis, toxoplasmosis, some viral infections, AIDS etc.

Our UVEITIS CLINIC is dedicated to the diagnosis and management of different types of Uveitis. Our internist helps us in this diagnosis process and plays a crucial role in management of associated systemic diseases, treatment with systemic steroids and immunosuppressive drugs when needed.


Though it is one of the sight threatening diseases, appropriate treatment and regular follow up usually controls the inflammation and their complications and save the vision and the eyes.

The Cataract and Comprehensive Ophthalmology Service
Cataract and intraocular lens implantation surgery is the most common operation performed in Bangladesh Eye Hospital. The specialists in the Bangladesh Eye Hospital are the pioneer of phacoemulsification cataract surgery and also multifocal IOL implantation in Bangladesh.

The Vitreo- Retinal Service


The Vitreo-Retinal Service provides diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the retina, vitreous and choroid. Commonly encountered conditions include retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal problems related to myopia, retinal vascular occlusion, ocular infections, retinitis pigmentosa and other heredofamilial retinal conditions.
